5 Tips for Avoiding Heart Failure

Avoiding heart failure should be a long-term goal for all of us, but sifting through all of the health information out there can cause confusion. A study conducted by Tufts University delivers a clearer picture of the things that really make a difference in long-term heart health. While the study focused on adults aged 65 and older, it’s probably safe to say that these tips will provide positive benefits for people of all ages. Here are the five most important things to do for avoiding heart failure.

1. Walking briskly on a regular basis has been proven by many studies to be an ideal form of exercise. It’s a great way to elevate your heart rate and reap the many health benefits of moderate exercise.

2. Being moderately active during leisure time might sound like a confusing concept…if your idea of leisure time means laying next to the pool instead of swimming in the pool! When you’re taking a vacation or a brief staycation, find little ways to get in some physical activity. Find a great hiking trail instead of a slow window shopping stroll. Try a kayaking tour instead of going out on a power boat.

3. Drinking alcohol only in moderation is another idea we have heard a lot in recent years. Enjoying a glass of wine with dinner could be good for your heart health – but drinking a bottle of wine will cancel out any potential health benefits. No need to deny yourself the pleasure of a drink here and there, but remember that the key is to stick to a moderate amount of alcohol.

4. Not smoking is a great method of avoiding heart failure, stroke, various cancers, emphysema, osteoporosis, aneurysms, rheumatoid arthritis, macular degeneration, high blood pressure…you get the picture. If you smoke, stopping could be the single most important decision you can make to improve your health.

5. Avoiding obesity is the fifth method of avoiding heart failure recommended in the Tufts study. The good news is that if you follow the first four tips, it will help you achieve this goal as well.
